  2. Digital Honour Code

I just started reading Sam Harris’ short ebook LYING, and I came across this great little passage right at the top:

    Digital Honor Code:

This ebook has been copyrighted and cannot be resold or excerpted without permission. However, you are welcome to share digital and/or physical copies of it with others. If you received your version of LYING for free, and want to pass it along to family, friends, and colleagues, I simply ask that you purchase one copy before doing so.

    Thank you for your support.

This is exactly how it should be done.
No nasty “all rights reserved, no copying or sharing, if you do, we will break into your home and eat your children!” warning, just a polite request that we act like decent human beings and not screw over the author.
Let’s face reality for a second: An ebook is a digital thing on a computer, and computers make perfect copies of digital things.  Any digital file saying “no copying” is an inherent contradiction, and I’ve yet to see a single example of digital restrictions that actually works and can’t be easily bypassed.
Thank you for getting it, Dr. Harris.
Now to see if the book itself is as good as the copyright notice…

  3. Problems with the #NewAesthetic

A brilliant follow-up to Wired’s article which I believe I posted last night. (If I didn’t post it here, it can be found on my twitter, google plus and facebook pages..I know I posted it to places.)

    prostheticknowledge:

A lot of talk has become of this topic amongst the tech and art worlds, and I have to confess it has been interesting to see the reaction on the topic. Something about “The New Aesthetic” ideas and discussions, for me, have been on my mind for a little while, and thought I would put them down. I’m certainly no academic and perfectly happy to be corrected if wrong (or to be completely ignored!), and I’m sure that the world doesn’t need another piece written about it. Anyway, if you are interested, carry on below …

  6. If you head down to Moore Gallery tomorrow, you will see this painting of mine on display.
Oh, and I’ll be there, too.  So if you’ve been internet-stalking me for a while, here’s your chance to introduce yourself and hang out in-person.
